The New Policeman by Kate Thompson
A great story, but a little hard to start. Once you understand that this story is set in present day Ireland, and some of the terms become clear (like “Grada” is a title for the police that means “Officer”) it’s a bit easier to follow. A boy goes on a quest to buy his mother some time, because she never seems to have any. There’s a lot of back story that all comes together in the end, involving legends and lore that many people don’t believe any more and somewhere in there you find out if the legends are really true or not!
